Chardonnay and Pinot Noir 2016

2016 vintage and wine tasting notes

The 2016 vintage marks the first venture into wine-making using the Lone Star Creek Wines brand. We have made a small parcel each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with the help of local wine maker Franco D’Anna (Hoddles Creek Estate Wines). Obviously sourced from our vineyard, the first effort is pleasing: for the wines themselves and the potential they offer for the future.

Pinot Noir

Vineyard:

Clone: Own rooted MV6
Vines planted in 1999. Sourced from a single vineyard, Upper Yarra Valley.

Season conditions:

Hot and dry start with early irrigation required. The effect of early warmth coupled with a big rain event in late January (post veraison) led to rapid development on the vine and historically early picking in late February. It was tempting to leave fruit on the vine longer to allow further flavour development. However, we felt it better to try and optimise the balance between ripeness, sugars and acidity through picking a bit earlier than most.

Winemaking:

Winemaker: Franco D’Anna
Total crush: 68 dozen
15% whole bunch, wild yeast fermentation, open tanks.
Maturation: nine months in used French Hogs Heads (300 l), Full malolactic fermentation
No fining or filtration, bottled 7 December, 2016.
Contains sulphites

Tasting Notes:

An approachable, easy drinking wine with classical perfumed MV6 pinot characters of red berries, red plum and a touch of savoury.

Medium weight on the palate with good length and clean finish.

Perfect on the patio with soft cheeses, rillettes or with saltimbocca, crispy pork belly, grilled quail, spring chicken pie.

12.5% alc/vol; Approx. 7.4 standard drinks

Produced by WineLink Investments: 165 Owens Road, Woori Yallock, Victoria, 3139 Batch 001
